I must admit that when I picked up Nicky Hilton’s “365 Style” I was skeptical about what “style” advice I could get from a Hilton. My knowledge of Nicky Hilton has been vastly overshadowed by her sister Paris’ fashion mishaps and party girl antics (albeit I have always enjoyed Paris’ unapologetic attitude and her album Stars Are Blind still plays at my house). Nicky Hilton has come a long way from her early days as a Celebutante — she is a successful fashion and jewelry designer, model, and is about to marry James Rothschild, a banker with an equally famous last name. Nicky’s new book is a cohesive collection of tips; stories and advice for women of all aesthetics, sizes, and budgets to better find their unique style and keep a clutter free wardrobe.
Hilton has compiled the essential clothing staples every woman should own by season and links these staples to her formula 3-6-5: Three most common occasions, six staple clothing items and five accessories. This formula lets one avoid cluttered closets, gives a streamlined outfit selection and helps keep you away from purchases you later regret or never wear. Do you often find yourself shopping for clothes and grabbing whatever catches your eye then filling up a fitting room only to be overwhelmed by all the clothes you just tried on? Nicky Hilton will help you never go down that scary road where either you buy too much, too little or the wrong thing.
This book consistently emphasizes finding your own unique style, then refining it with the 365 formula. Three seasonal occasions. Nicky’s 3 occasions are: daytime casual, out on the town, and special events. With six staple pieces. Nicky’s Fall 6’s are: collared shirt, classic jacket, sweater dress, dark skinny jeans, leather skirt or pant, and a comfy sweater. Finish this all off with 5 accessories. Nicky’s Fall 5’s are: booties, loafers, scarves, cross body bag, and an envelope clutch. I must say I think this is brilliant!
The book is peppered with fun and uniquely Nicky Hilton memories, like unknowingly wearing her mothers prized Chopard necklace to the Met Gala at 16; Tom Ford tapping Nicky on the shoulder and saying “Let me show you how to wear this” as he adjusted the neck of his Gucci designed dress on her at a Vanity Fair Oscar’s party, and being styled by Andre Leon Tally for Vogue’s Best Dressed in America list at 16. The book also includes additional tips that go beyond the basic and delve into packing for travel, what to wear on a first date, what to wear when you “meet the parents”, and finding your own style signature that makes your look “you”. Nicky’s is a Cat motif.
